NCCAA Region Tournament Ends Covenant Volleyball Season

Lookout Mountain, GA- After making such an incredible 7-1 run in the last 8 games of the regular season, the Lady Scots volleyball team seemed poised to continue their domination when they heard they would be hosting the NCCAA Mid-East region tournament.  In pool play held on day one of the tournament, Covenant was grouped with former AAC foe King College as well as the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University.  Friday started out well for Covenant with King beating Oakland City in three quick games- meaning that a Covenant victory over Oakland City would ensure them a match on Saturday.  With this fact in mind, the Lady Scots came out of the gates with a purpose: playing smart and hitting hard.  Joanna McGill and Kristin Dahlstrand earned 3 assists each, and Jessie Jakes succeeded on 4 attacks in only 6 total attempts.  In game two, Covenant lost some of their focus losing 11-25 but rebounded well in game three to regain the overall lead at 2 games to 1.  Although Covenant also lost game four, the loss had nothing to do with a loss of focus.  16 of the 20 points for the Lady Scots in that game came off of monstrous attacks: Erica Adams and Jessie Jakes had 4; Emily Dupree 3; Johanna Stoep 2; and Joanna McGill, Emily Stewart, and Kaitlyn Glass 1.  Despite exhausting so much energy and mental effort in the game 4 loss, Covenant again rebounded exceptionally well in the deciding 15 point fifth game, but Oakland City came out on top 16-14.

At his point in the day, Pool A's standings were as follows: King #1 at 1-0, Oakland City #2 at 1-1, and Covenant #3 at 0-1.  Thus, a Covenant victory over King would bring each team level at .500 and would lead to some tie-breaking procedures.  During the season, Covenant played King only once in a 4 game loss at the end of September.  In that match, Johanna Stoep pounded 11 kills on 20 attempts with only 2 errors, but Covenant also committed 58 errors as a team.  Saturday's match saw Covenant bring their errors down to 37, but the Lady Scots could not get going offensively.  Jessie Jakes blasted 13 kills on 47 attempts, but the rest of the ladies combined for a .051 attack percentage.  In the end, the Lady Tornado prevailed and eventually went on to the Mid-East region championship where they lost to Campbellsville University.  Covenant's season ended at 14-18.
