WILLIAMSBURG, Kent. -- Covenant was again on the road this past weekend, this time at NAIA member University of the Cumberlands to take on the host Lady Patriots and also NCAA Division II's Urbana University.
The Lady Scots avenged an earlier loss this season at Barnes Gymnasium to the Lady Patriots in a five set win 3-2 (21-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-21, 17-15) over the University of Cumberlands to begin Saturday's tri-match. In the second match, Covenant battled hard but were handled by the Lady Knights of Urbana University, falling in straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-22).
After going 0-6 in matches that go the full five sets to begin the year, the Lady Scots have now won consecutive five set matches. Erica Adams led Covenant in kills with 18 as the Lady Scots were able to bounce back from a 2-0 deficit and win the final three games, something that the Lady Scots had not been able to accomplish all year. Jessie Jakes and Emily Stewart also recorded double figures in kills with 12 and 11 respectively, with Jakes also tied for the team lead in digs with 20 (Paige Cheney also had 20 digs). Kristin Dahlstrand continued her outstanding year, getting 36 assists in the win.
The second match did not go as well as the first one as the Lady Knights of Urbana University were able to hold off a battling Lady Scots team in just three sets. Erica Adams again led the Lady Scots in kills with 8, and Paige Cheney chipped in with 12 digs.
With the split, Covenant sees its record stay at five games over .500 at 17-12 as the Lady Scots get ready to play their final home match of the year on Wednesday, November 3 against Tennessee Wesleyan College at 7:00. Covenant senior Emily Dupree will be honored during Senior Night before the match.
