LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- On a very chilly and windy Tuesday night, the Lady Scots soccer team played Tennessee Temple University in the opening round of the 2011 NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament. Covenant dominated the game, allowing no goals for Temple and scoring eight of its own. Freshman Bethany Logan claimed two of those goals while six other Lady Scots claimed the rest.
Just over seven minutes into the game, junior defender Eliza Drew got the scoring started with a shot from roughly 25 yards out that went past 'Temple goalkeeper Alisha Smith's hands. Within two minutes, Mo Cross doubled the lead with a header into the corner of the net. Teagan Wood came up with Covenant's next goal when Drew fed a pass between Lady Crusader defenders to give Wood a clean breakaway. Bethany Logan rounded out the first half scoring in the 23rd minute with a shot that she scored on a deflection in the box.
Two minutes into the second half, Kasey Craft scored on a pass from Katelyn Newsome. Logan then found her second goal of the evening after receiving a through-ball from Cross that gave her a breakaway of her own. Rachel Carleton had Covenant's seventh goal when she scored directly from a corner kick. The junior's crossing "pass" incidentally caromed off Smith's shoulder and into the goal. Mary Buys scored the final goal for the Lady Scots in the 86th minute on a shot from the top of the penalty area.
Covenant had a total of 34 shots during the night compared to Temple's two.
As the ladies advance in the tournament, their record improves to 9-8-2 while Temple, having been eliminated, drops to 4-15. Covenant will play Trevecca Nazarene University in the semi-final round of the Mid-East tournament on Friday, Nov. 18. The winner of that match goes on to the final against the Campbellsville/ Asbury University winner on Saturday. The championship match will punch an automatic ticket to the NCCAA National Championship later this season.
