MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- The Covenant volleyball team began its quest for a conference title on Friday by facing Meredith, the second-seed from the North Division. Covenant received 15 kills apiece from Cora Schroeder and Hannah Rogers to lead the Lady Scots to a 3-1 win (24-26, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20).
Covenant (21-10) advances to play the South Division's No. 1 seed, Maryville, tomorrow at noon. Meredith ends their season with a record of 21-10.
In a tightly contested first set, Meredith was down 16-10 when they surged back to win 10 of the next 13 and take their first lead of the set, 20-19. The Avenging Angels took the first set 26-24, but the Lady Scots swept the next three: 25-22, 22-20, and 25-16.
Covenant's balanced attack was led by Rogers who tallied 15 kills while hitting .312. Schroeder also had 15 kills while Chelsea VanDyk and Anna Swain added 13 and 10, respectively. Stephanie Kirkpatrick at the helm of the attack notched 46 assists and 10 digs for her 16th doube-double of the year.
Defensively, Estes Carlson led the Lady Scots with 22 digs. VanDyk also contributed two block solo's and four block assists at the nets.
USA South Rookie of the Year, Karlie Long, led the attack for Meredith with 14 kills. Emily Hendricks also notched double digit kills with 10. Anna Hayes had 19 assists and Clarke Glendenning had 17.
The Avenging Angels also had 13 total team blocks led by Jasmine Aguinaldo who had four block solo's and a block assists. Molly Markley had a block solo and six block assists.
Covenant will now turns its attention to Maryville. Maryville won both regular season contests, but the second match went five sets as the Scots from Maryville won all three sets by the minimum two points.
