DECATUR, Ga. -- Shooting for their fifth win in seven matches to begin the year, the Covenant volleyball team cruised past former conference foe Agnes Scott 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-21) on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Chelsea VanDyk, the reigning USA South Player of the Week, had yet another stellar performance to lead Covenant (5-2). VanDyk tallied 15 kills and had an attacking percentage of .444. She now ranks third in the USA South in kills per set at 3.93 and is fifth in total kills despite playing two fewer matches than the leaders above.
Estes Carlson, the two-time reigning USA South Defensive Player of the Week, was once again the leader on defense as she compiled 16 digs to go along with four service aces. Stephanie Kirkpatrick added 25 assists, 14 digs and three kills on the night.
Covenant opened up a close first set by scoring 12 of 14 points during one stretch to take a 21-9 lead after a kill by VanDyk. The second set was tighter, but again the Lady Scots were able to break away towards the end to take a 2-0 match lead. Covenant had 16 kills in the second set as a team.
Agnes Scott would not go away quietly in the third set as the teams traded points for much of the game. Trailing 21-19, Covenant secured the match victory by claiming the final six points of the set thanks to a pair of kills from VanDyk and one each from Caroline Cone and Kelsey Mathis.
Hannah Rogers chipped in six kills while Cora Schroeder had five with eight digs. Each of the 11 members of the team saw action for Covenant.
Agnes Scott (1-8) was led by Morgan Bender's eight kills and 11 digs. Reigning Great South Athletic Conference Player of the Week Lauren Aikens added seven kills and Kayleigh McCrary added 11 assists for the Scotties.
Covenant will host new NAIA member Dalton State on Friday at Barnes Physical Education Center. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
