MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant women's soccer team dropped a second straight 3-1 decision to a USA South foe, with the latest coming against Maryville on Wednesday night.
Maryville overwhelmed the visiting Covenant squad with relentless offensive pressure that produced 16 shots on goal, the most given up by Covenant all year. Covenant keeper Lucy Johnson did her best to keep the Lady Scots in the match as she tied a career-high with 13 saves. It is the the second time in four matches that Johnson has recorded 13 saves.
Covenant had five shots, with two on goal. Maryville goalkeeper Rachel Taylor made one save to help Maryville (7-4, 5-0 USA South) keep pace with Meredith atop the USA South. Covenant (5-6-1, 3-2 USA South) falls two games back in the conference standings.
The first score of the game came in the 23rd minute, when Maryville's Allyson Hale scored her fifth goal of the season to put Covenant into an early hole. The first half ended with that same 1-0 score.
It wasn't until the latter part of the second half that Maryville was able to solve Johnson again and make it 2-0 in the 74th minute, when Hale scored her second goal of the night. Less than a minute later, Maryville's Jordyn Lee put the game away with her goal in the 75th minute.
Anna Porch tallied the lone goal for Covenant in the 75th minute, capping a wild two minutes that saw the two teams combine for three goals. It was Porch's 10th goal of the year.
Covenant aims to break its two-game losing streak when they return to Scotland Yard for a 5 p.m. Homecoming match against LaGrange on Saturday, October 4.
