MARTINSVILLE, Va.--The Covenant women's volleyball team is bound for the USA South conference championship game after they defeated Meredith in four sets at Patrick Henry Community College on Saturday.
The Lady Scots will face Maryville at 5 p.m. with an automatic bid for the NCAA tournament at stake.
Battling a tough Meredith squad, who was seeded No. 1 in the USA South North division, and a crowd that was heavily on the side of the Avenging Angels, Covenant was able to win the first game 25-19 on the strength of 19 kills and a team hitting percentage of .447.
Meredith came back to even the match with a 25-21 victory in the second set.
In the third set, both teams went back and forth in a tight set where neither team had a lead of more than three after the Lady Scots jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Meredith got back in it with four straight points, making it 7-6. The score was then tied at 13, 16, 17, 21, 22, and 23 before Covenant scored the last two points to give them the set at 25-23.
With a 2-1 lead, the Lady Scots closed it out with a 25-17 victory. Trailing 14-10, Covenant went on a run of 11 consecutive points to take a 21-14 lead and virtually put the game away.
Ginny Moore finished with 22 kills and eight digs, Chloe Carlson had 19 digs, Chelsea VanDyk had 14 kills, and Schuyler Moore had eight kills, 30 assists, and 11 digs.
With the victory, the Lady Scots set a school record by winning their 27th game of the season.
Covenant has a tough task in taking on Maryville, the overall top seed, who is undefeated in conference play.
