Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Scots Ride First Half Shooting into the Win Column

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team scorched the nets in the first half, raced out to a commanding lead, and cruised to its first victory of the season, 67-43 over N.C. Wesleyan.

Aleigha Williams off the bench along with Haley Soles led the Scots and all scorers with 14 points apiece as Covenant shot 64 percent from the field, including 71.4 percent from 3-point range in the first half.

The Scots (1-13, 1-5 USA South) weren't too shabby on the defensive end either, holding N.C. Wesleyan (3-8, 1-5 USA South) to just 14.3 percent shooting in the first half, and 21.4 percent overall.

Making five of its first six shots to start the game, Covenant raced out to a 12-0 lead within the first five minutes of the game. Rachel Price had five points during that stretch. The Scots then hit a dry spell, scoring only five points in a six-and-a-half minute stretch as the Bishops cut the lead to 17-13.

Only up four, Abbey Bailey hit a 3-pointer with 6:58 to play that ignited a 24-2 Covenant run that put the Scots up at halftime 41-15.

It was then a matter of not letting N.C. Wesleyan get back into the game, which Covenant did by continuing their strong defensive play. The Bishops would not get within 17 points the rest of the contest.

Williams added seven rebounds and Soles was 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Bailey chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds before fouling out late in the game, while Morgan Woodward flirted with a triple-double with nine points, eight assists, and six rebounds. Price led Covenant with nine rebounds.

For the game, the Scots shot 43.4 percent from the floor and were 8-of-14 from 3-point range. The 67 points is a season-high.

N.C. Wesleyan was led by Jordan Cager, who had 10 points and eight rebounds. Netaih Davis added nine points and 12 rebounds off the bench for the Bishops.

Covenant will try to make it two wins in a row when they host William Peace at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
