LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team outscored visiting Agnes Scott 16-6 in the overtime period to pick up an 82-72 victory on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon inside Barnes PE Center.
Four players scored in double figures for Covenant (3-19) led by a career-high 21 points from Jessica Bell. Aleigha Williams scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Haley Soles tallied 12 points and six rebounds.
Before the game, senior Morgan Woodward and Kiersten Nielsen were recognized for their careers. Woodward had a career day as she registered her first double-double, while flirting with a triple-double, with 15 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Nielsen started and knocked down a 3-pointer to go with two rebounds.
Covenant trailed 30-29 at halftime after Soles and Williams accounted for 23 of Covenant's points. The Scots went on an 8-2 run to start the second half to take a 37-32 lead after a Woodward layup with 17:20 remaining. Covenant took its largest lead of the second half at 62-54 after a Bell layup with 4:39 left.
Agnes Scott ultimately rallied and tied the score at 66 after a Brittany Howard free throw with 2.1 seconds left in regulation. Howard missed the second free throw and the Scots were unable to get a shot off before time expired.
In the overtime session, Bell took over as she scored seven points in the period. Covenant scored first on a pair of free throws by Liz Dougherty and would go ahead 70-66 after a Dougherty jumper. Bell converted a conventional three-point play with 2:54 left giving the Scots a 75-67 lead. Made free throws down the stretch iced the game for Covenant.
Shavonne Orr led Agnes Scott (4-12) with 24 points. Playing all 45 minutes, Care Bacon had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Howard added 13 points and two assists. Agnes Scott shot 38.5 percent (25-of-65) from the field and 10-of-21 from 3-point land.
Abbey Bailey added six points and 12 rebounds for the Scots before fouling out. Dougherty finished with eight points. Covenant shot 42.5 percent (31-of-73) for the game and went 16-of-24 from the free throw line. The Scots dished out 16 assists and had just 14 turnovers.
Covenant will get back into USA South play on Wednesday when its hosts Piedmont. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., or 25 minutes after the conclusion of the men's game.
