Volleyball Falls To Sewanee On Senior Night

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team was swept, 3-0, by Sewanee on Wednesday night from the Barnes PE Center.

Prior to the match, the Scots honored the three seniors, Emily Moore, Lindsey Stephens, and Allie Jakes, for their contribution to the program over the past four years.

The group of seniors captured three conference division titles, one conference tournament championship, one NCAA tournament appearance, and 67 wins.

Moore led all players with 21 digs in the match as Meriel Chupp led Covenant with four kills. Sara Delk posted 11 digs, while Riley Howe dug 10 attacks in the contest. Leah Buys had 17 of the 19 Scot assists.

With Moore's 21 digs it put her over 1,300 digs in her career.

In set number one Sewanee jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Covenant then cut the lead to just three off a Tiger error that started a 4-2 run capped off by a Stephens kill to make the score 24-22. Sewanee answered with a kill of their own though to take the first set 25-22.

Set two was all Sewanee, scoring the first five points of the set and never looking back as they took the set 25-13. The Tigers had nine kills with only three errors on 43 attacks for a .140 clip in the set.

Set three saw the Scot crowd come alive in a back-and-forth set that saw 11 ties and four lead changes. Neither team could grab the lead early on. After falling behind 4-1 the Scots answered with a four-point spurt to take a 5-4 advantage.

The two teams then traded points until Covenant had four straight blocks, the first by Jakes and Grace Logterman, the last three by Jakes and Jess Chesrown to take a 15-13 edge.

The Tigers answered evening things up at 16. Later, with both teams tied at 18, Sewanee went on a four-point spurt to take a 22-18 lead. The Scots answered with three straight points of their own to cut the lead to one, but it was not enough as the Tigers took the final set 25-21.

Sewanee was paced by Destiny Stewart with 10 kills while Constance Connolly had 25 assists in the match. Stewart rounded out a double-double with 13 digs, and Connolly did the same with 10. Sidney White led the Tiger defense, digging 14 attacks.

The Scots recorded nine blocks in the contest as Jakes led the field with five, followed by Chesrown with four.
