Kelly Sets Program Record, Men's Tennis Splits Weekend Matches

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The Covenant men's tennis team split a pair of matches this weekend on the road in USA South play.

The Scots took a match at Huntingdon on Friday afternoon 9-0 as Tyler Kelly broke the school all-time singles wins record for a freshman before dropping Saturday's match at LaGrange 5-4.

FRIDAY: Covenant 9, Huntingdon 0

Tyler Kelly recorded his 15th win to break the school all-time singles win record for a freshman. Kelly defeated Charlie Jones 6-1, 6-0 at six singles for the win to get singles play started.

The Scots clinched the match just a few moments later as Logan Hull took care of Mark Melchor 6-4, 6-1 at the one spot for a 5-0 match advantage.

Covenant jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead taking doubles play in order.

Trey Wood and Paxton Haggerty made quick work of Mark Melchor and Anjala Chandrasoma 8-1 at one. Hull and Chris Morton took care of Carson Sands and Clint Robinson 8-2 at two doubles just before Sam Jordan and Tristian Smallwood defeated Kevaughnte Merrion and Domenic Terrell 8-3 at the three slot.

In the rest of singles play the Scots did not drop a set in the win.

Haggerty defeated Chandrasoma 6-2, 6-1 at the two spot before Ben Luke defeated Sands 6-2, 6-4 at three singles.

Morton took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Merrion at four before Cameron Cortman wrapped up the match with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Robinson at five singles.

The Scots improved to 8-7 on the year, and 8-2 in the USA South. Huntingdon fell to 6-10 overall, and 3-7 in conference play.

SATURDAY: LaGrange 5, Covenant 4

After taking on a 3-2 match lead the Scots could not hold off a LaGrange comeback before dropping the match 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.

Covenant got on the board first with a Hull and Morton 8-6 victory over Will Thompson and Caleb Edde at two doubles. The Panthers quickly answered taking the one spot 8-5 but the Scots were able to come away with a 2-1 advantage as Kelly and Luke won three doubles in a tiebreak (8-7 (5)) for the Scots.

LaGrange got the first point of singles play as John Mitchell Benton defeated Haggerty 6-1, 6-3 at two singles to even the match at two all. The Scots were able to take their final lead of the night as Hull defeated Thompson 7-5, 6-3 at the one spot for a 3-2 match lead.

The Panthers then took the next three matches to secure the victory.

Luke played a hard three-set match with Edde falling 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 at three singles. Cortman fell at the five 6-0, 6-3 to Trevor McLemore. Morton played Kyle Kelley to a tough 7-5 first set before dropping the second set 6-1 at the four spot.

Kelly continued his stellar freshman campaign tacking on another win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Caleb Tyler at the six slot in the final match of the night.

Covenant falls back to an even 8-8 on the year, and 8-3 in USA South competition. LaGrange improves to 10-3 on the season and 9-2 in the USA South.

The Scots play host to Maryville College on April 19th to wrap up the regular season at the Covenant Tennis Complex beginning at 1 p.m.
