ATLANTA, Ga. --
Emma Kalbfleisch,
Reagan Keener, and
Riley Howe had double-digit kills but the Covenant volleyball team could not hold a 2-0 match lead and fell in five sets (26-28, 26-28, 25-18, 25-17, 15-12) at Oglethorpe on Wednesday night.
It was the final non-conference match of the year for Covenant (15-8). Oglethorpe (8-14) secured a season split with the Scots as both contests went five sets.
Kalbfleisch had 15 kills, while Keener had a career-high 13 kills to go with three blocks and six digs in the loss. Howe tallied a double-double with 12 kills and a team-high 19 digs, while
Rachel Bartlett also had a double-double with 38 assists and 16 digs.
Grace Logterman recorded five kills and a team-high five blocks with
Anna Baldwin chipping in 16 digs.
Each of the first two sets went to extra points as the Scots took a 2-0 match lead.
Covenant had 15 kills in the opening set, but trailed 18-14 before going on a 5-1 run to take a 20-19 lead on a Howe kill. Oglethorpe rallied had two set point chances, but back-to-back kills from Keener knotted the score at 24-24. The Scots grabbed the lead for good at 27-26 with a combined block from Keener and Logterman before a
Kyla Bailey kill gave Covenant the 28-26 set win.
In the second set, Covenant used an 8-2 run to take a 23-19 lead late. After Oglethorpe rallied, the Scots fended off a Stormy Petrel set point and scored the final three points to grab the frame and take a 2-0 lead.
Over the final three sets, Covenant had to play catch-up and could not overcome Oglethorpe. The host Stormy Petrels never trailed in the third or fourth sets as the match was sent into the fifth.
The final stanza was tight until Oglethorpe scored three straight to take a 12-9 lead. After a Scots timeout, Kalbfleisch and
Summer Johnson registered kills on consecutive rallies to draw Covenant within 12-11. A Howe kill tied the score at 12-12, but Oglethorpe had the final answer with three straight to end the match.
Bailey had seven kills and seven digs for the Scots. Johnson contributed 14 assists, nine digs, and four kills.Â
Jackie Schner had a match-high 20 kills for Oglethorpe as Gabbi Phillips had 31 assists.
UP NEXT
Covenant returns to Barnes PE Center on Saturday for Senior Day. The Scots face Huntingdon at noon and Agnes Scott at 4 p.m. Senior Day ceremony will take place prior to the first match.
