Men's Tennis Sweeps Its Way to Season-Opening Wins

CONWAY/CLARKSVILLE, Ark. -- The Covenant men's tennis team stormed out of the gates to start the season with a pair of 9-0 victories over non-conference foes Hendrix and Ozarks over the weekend in Arkansas.

Covenant (2-0) took down Hendrix on Friday night and completed the weekend with another 9-0 win over Ozarks on Saturday.

On Friday, Covenant cruised to wins at the top two doubles spots and eked out an 8-6 win at No. 3 as Ethan Gibson and Gill Dunn combined on the victory to give the Scots a 3-0 lead.

In singles play, Austin Dreslinski collected his first collegiate singles win with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Joseph Donaldson at the No. 2 spot to put the Scots up 4-0. Gibson then captured the win for the Scots with his 6-0, 6-2 win over Morgan Ogelsbee at No. 3.

At the top spot, Ben Luke outlasted Eric Meyne in a pair of set tiebreaks 7-6(6), 7-6(5). Solomon Crouch also got his first career singles win with a three-set win over Micah Moore, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-1) at No. 4.

Dunn and Paxton Haggerty each took wins at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively to close the match.

In Saturday's triumph over Ozarks, Covenant again used the momentum from a doubles sweep to cruise through singles play. Crouch and Dreslinski teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Luke and Haggerty notched an 8-6 win at No. 2 and Gibson and Dunn were 8-1 winners at No. 3.

Dreslinski picked up a three-set win over Aaron Gambrell, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-4) at the No. 2 position before Gibson again notched the match-clincher with a 6-3, 6-2 win over TJ Saniseng at No. 3.

Luke was victorious, 6-4, 6-4 over Hikaru Yamaya at the No. 1 spot. Covenant rolled to wins at the final three spots with Crouch, Dunn, and Tyler Kelly picking up wins.
