Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Takes Tigers 64-56, Drops Close Game with Bruins 61-62

DECEMBER 3– After an eleven-day hiatus since their win over Concordia on November 19, the Covenant women's basketball team returned to action as they traveled to Sewanee in their third road game of the season.

Keeping the winning streak rolling, the Scots picked up a 64-56 victory over the hosting Tigers. Coming back from a five-point deficit at half, Covenant controlled both of the final two quarters. Allowing the Tigers to score only five points in the entire third quarter, the Scots continued to put their defensive prowess on display.

Sophomore guard Breezy Savage led the Scots' offense, tallying a career-high 14 points while shooting 80% from the field and 100% from beyond the arc. Senior guard Cosette Kirsch and sophomore forward Abby Witt also reached double digits in points scored, with Kirsch picking up 13 and Witt with 10 of her own.

While the offensive attack for Covenant seemed to be effortless, senior guard Ruthie Moore dominated on the glass as she pulled down 13 rebounds to go along with her nine points and three assists. Moore's rebounding contribution led the Scots to out-rebound the Tigers 43-37.

Remaining in the win column for a second straight game, the Scots returned home to Lookout Mountain in order to host the visiting Bruins of Bob Jones in a 4:00 PM game. Entering the final contest before the beginning of conference matchups at a record of 3-3, Covenant had an opportunity to enter CCS play with a winning record and a four-game win streak.

Covenant was led in scoring against the Bruins by the efforts of Ruthie Moore and Abby Witt; both finished the night with 12 points a-piece. Moore also ended the contest with 12 rebounds as she secured her second double-double of the season. Junior guard Karis McIntosh picked up 11 points herself, six of which came from three-point territory.

Having come out on top in their last two matchups against the Bruins, the Scots appeared to enter the game confident and prepared for the day. Securing possession off of the starting tip, Covenant established their presence on both ends of the court. Over the course of the first half, the Scots had built a 33-18 lead while tallying five steals and two blocks on the defensive end.

The first half offensive totals were led for the Scots by Ruthie Moore, with nine points, and Cosette Kirsch, with six points. The experienced duo showed just how comfortable they were on their home court as Moore entered the half leading the team with nine rebounds while Kirsch led the squad in assists with four.

As the second half began, the Bruins had clearly made some changes during the break and went on a 12-3 run. Having the lead cut down to only six points, the Scots responded quickly with an 8-0 run of their own, sparked by junior forward Megan Rouse's back-to-back blocks in a single possession for the Bruins. In addition, Rouse finished up the game with three points, five rebounds, and three total blocks.

However, Bob Jones battled in the final minutes of the game, outscoring the Scots 27-9 in the fourth quarter and erasing the 54-35 Covenant lead to go up by one point with only eight seconds remaining. Despite a final opportunity to reclaim the lead, Covenant fell 61-62, their record moving to 3-4 on the season.
