No. 24 Covenant Falls in Five Sets to No. 7 Emory; Ends Historic Season

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Looking to advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in school history, No. 24 Covenant took on No. 7 Emory. The Scots fell just short in a five-set thriller with the Eagles, ending their historic season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • In the beginning of the first set, Carly Wallace was on the attack for Emory with three kills and a service ace to give it a 5-1 lead. 
  • On Kyla Bailey's service rotation, the Scots rode a 7-0 run to put themselves in front 14-10. 
  • Emory got back within one point at 18-17 and 19-18, but could not tie the set up. 
  • Kelsey Carman had the set-clinching kill assisted by Rachel Bartlett at 25-22 to give Covenant a 1-0 lead. 
  • With set two tied at three, the Eagles went on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 12-3 lead. 
  • The Scots wouldn't get closer than seven points the rest of the set, dropping it 25-12 to even the match at one. 
  • Covenant and Emory traded points in the early goings of set three as a Cali Sandhoff kill tied the set at seven. 
  • The two teams continued to go back-and-forth, but a 4-0 run from Covenant, highlighted by a service ace from Bailey gave it a little cushion at 20-17. 
  • Carman once again had the set-winning kill at 25-20 to put the Scots up 2-1. 
  • Emory scored six of the first eight points in set four to start the set on the front foot. 
  • A kill from Emma Kalbfleisch kept Covenant within six points at 13-7.
  • The Eagles extended their lead throughout the rest of the set, ultimately winning 25-14 to force a fifth and final set. 
  • A kill by Kalbfleisch and an attack error from Emory gave Covenant a 2-0 lead in the fifth set. 
  • The Scots then fell victim to a 9-0 run from the Eagles to put themselves down seven. 
  • Covenant battled back and won some hard-fought points on a 5-0 run to get back within one point at 13-12.
  • A service error from the Scots followed by a kill by the Eagles ended the set at 15-12 and the match. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant drops to 3-17 all-time against Emory and 2-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. 
  • Kalbfleisch had 17 kills to lead the Scots offensively and she also had seven digs. 
  • Bartlett posted another double-double with 38 assists and 17 digs.
  • Haerer tallied eight kills and five total blocks. 
  • Jennings ended her freshman year with 21 digs. 

UP NEXT: The Scots will have time to reflect on their historic season that broke multiple school records, before they start planning for next year.
