Covenant Defeats Sewanee, Moves to 4-0

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - After a perfect opening weekend on the road, the Scots hosted Sewanee for their home opener. With the support of a great crowd, Covenant took down the Tigers to move to 4-0. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Scots and Tigers were neck-and-neck early on in set one as a service ace from Kelsey Carman put her team one back at 9-8.
  • Later on, a 4-0 scoring run for Sewanee gave it a 17-11 advantage. 
  • Three consecutive points for the Scots cut the lead to 17-14, but they could not pull within three the rest of the set, as they lost set one 25-20. 
  • In set two, Covenant jumped out to a 7-4 lead after a kill from Hannah Haerer off a Rachel Bartlett set. 
  • With the score at 9-7, the Scots rode a 6-0 run with Sarah Jennings serving to break open the second set. 
  • Covenant scored four of the last five points to take set two in commanding fashion, 25-15. 
  • With the score tied at eight in the third set, Ella Bailey made an impact with two service aces while leading a 6-0 run. 
  • Kills from Kyla Bailey and Emma Kalbfleisch pushed the Scots third set lead to 19-12. 
  • Covenant closed out set three 25-17, behind a service ace from Kalbfleisch and a kill from Kennedy Barber
  • Kalbfleisch and Barber continued to be effective offensively with two early kills in the fourth set to give the Scots a 4-2 advantage. 
  • With the set tied at eight, the Scots went on a 7-1 run to break away from the Tigers. 
  • A couple of kills from Barber with a kill mixed in by Kelsey Carman put Covenant on the brink of victory with the score at 20-11. 
  • Defending CCS Offensive Player of the Week K. Bailey ended the match the right way with a kill assisted by Bartlett. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 21-29 all-time against Sewanee.
  • The Scots have won four of their last five against the Tigers. 
  • Kalbfleisch led the Scots with 14 kills. 
  • Carman had a game-high 14 digs while Jennings was right behind her with 13. 
  • Bartlett set a season-high in assists with 39.

UP NEXT: The Scots travel to Lexington, Kentucky for three games this weekend. Their first game is against Muskingum on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
