Scots Start Kentucky Trip With Sweep

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Covenant began a busy week of five matches on Tuesday night at Spalding for a nonconference battle. The Golden Eagles proved to be no match for the Scots as the away side earned the 3-0 sweep.

Final: Covenant 3, Spalding 0
Records: Covenant (14-10), Spalding (4-17)

In the first set, the two teams were neck-and-neck until the midway point of the set, when the Scots went on a 5-0 run on Cali Sandhoff's service rotation to go up 17-11. The Scots continued to extend their lead as three consecutive attack errors from the Golden Eagles closed the set at 25-16.

In set two, Covenant scored eight of the first 10 points to keep its momentum from set one. Later in the set, Spalding clawed its way back to being down just two points before Covenant gained control again. The Scots eventually won the set 25-15, ending it on a 4-0 run, capped off by a service ace from Carmen Harvey.

Set three had an exciting finish as Covenant went ahead 24-20 before Spalding raddled off three points in a row to stay alive. It was then Kinsley Dupree who got the game-winning kill for the Scots to win the set by two points and sweep the match.

Looking at the box score, Covenant tallied 37 kills while Spalding had 32. Defensively, the Golden Eagles had 42 digs to the Scots' 35. Covenant totaled five service aces and five total blocks while Spalding ended up with three in both statistical categories.

Sandhoff and Amber Snook each posted 16 assists for the Scots while Sandhoff also had nine kills and seven digs. Dupree and Kennedy Barber also were key players in the Covenant attack, both reaching seven kills.

This was the first meeting between the two schools as Covenant moves to 1-0 all-time against Spalding.

UP NEXT: Covenant stays in Kentucky to take on Asbury tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. for a big CCS match.
