LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - It was a long day of volleyball inside Barnes P.E. Center, with four matches, two of which Covenant played in, starting at 12:00 p.m. and lasting until just after 9:00 p.m. Covenant found itself in two five-set thrillers, winning against LaGrange before falling to Centre in the nightcap.Â
Game 1 Final: Covenant 3, LaGrange 2
Records: Covenant (16-11, 11-3 CCS), LaGrange (10-17, 8-5 CCS)
LaGrange narrowly won the first set 26-24, but Covenant responded with a dominant 25-13 win in set two to tie the match at one. However, the away side found some rhythm again, taking set three 25-18. The Scots had to battle in set four, but ultimately won 25-21 to send it to the final set.Â
In set five, Covenant scored the first five points with five kills from three different players. From that point on, the Blue and White did not look back, winning 15-9. The five-set win marks the second of such against LaGrange this year.Â
In the team box score, Covenant had a higher total in kills with 51 to LaGrange's 41. At the net, Covenant had 13 total blocks while LaGrange had 10.Â
Scarltt Martz led the Covenant attack with a career-high 15 kills. Amber Snook (24 assists, 11 digs) and Cali Sandhoff (17 assists, 11 digs) each had double-doubles for the Scots. Defensively, Sarah Jennings posted 26 digs.Â
Game 2 Final: Covenant 2, Centre 3
Records: Covenant (16-12, 11-3 CCS), Centre (14-10, 5-7 SAA)
The first two sets could've gone either way, with the Colonels winning set one 25-22, before the Scots took set two 25-23. Covenant used that momentum to power through set three and earn a 25-21 win. Centre then made some adjustments in set four to win 25-19 and send the match to a final set.Â
After the Colonels scored the first four points of set five, Covenant responded with a 5-0 run to take the lead. The two teams went back and forth before a 3-0 run by Centre put it ahead 14-12, and one point away from the road win. Covenant held off one match point, but a kill from Centre ended things at 15-13.Â
The box score was almost identical in several statistical categories as Covenant had 48 kills to Centre's 47. Defensively, Covenant totaled 114 digs while Centre had 112. One advantage the Colonels had was with service aces, totaling 17 on the night.Â
Snook (24 assists, 18 digs) and Sandhoff (16 assists, 18 digs) each had double-doubles in the win to lead the Scots. Kennedy Barber and Delaney Stirm each had nine kills, delivering strong performances for their team. Stirm also had 16 digs. Jennings brought in 29 digs, which is a season high.Â
