LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Covenant took on LeTourneau and Sewanee on day two of the Coca-Cola Classic, splitting its two games, using a late comeback in its second game to do so.Â
In the match against LeTourneau, Covenant was defeated 3-1. The first set was back-and-forth, with both teams having set points before the YellowJackets won 29-27.Â
LeTourneau took the second set 25-20 then Covenant answered by winning set three 25-22. The YellowJackets quickly ended any momentum the Scots had going into set four as they took a 10-2 lead on their way to a 25-12 win.Â
One of the keys for LeTourneau was defense at the net, as it totaled 13 blocks while Covenant had four. Aubrianna Gerdes with 12 kills and 10 digs, and Cali Sandhoff with 15 assists and 13 digs each had double-doubles in the loss.Â
In the final match of the Coca-Cola Invitational, Covenant reverse-swept Sewanee 3-2 behind a raucous crowd in Barnes P.E. Center.Â
The Tigers won set one 25-19 and slightly edged out the Scots 26-24 in set two, seeming to be in control of the match. In set three, Sewanee was two points away from sealing the match;Â however, five consecutive points for Covenant gave it the set 25-23.
Covenant continued to battle as it led from start to finish in set four, winning 25-21, and sending the match to a final set. In the fifth set, Sewanee scored the first two points, but Covenant didn't lose its poise, eventually coming back to win 15-12. The win was capped off by an impressive solo block from Scarlett Martz.Â
The Scots had three players post double-doubles. Gerdes ended her day with a career-high 22 digs and a career-high 16 kills in the win for another double-double. Sandhoff also had another double-double with 22 digs and 25 assists. Amber Snook tallied 19 assists and 15 digs for the final double-double.Â
Kennedy Barber with 11 kills and Martz with 10 kills also had strong games for Covenant.Â
After the match, Barber and Gerdes were named to the Coca-Cola Classic All-Tournament Team.Â
Covenant is back in action on Friday when it begins the California Lutheran Invitational.Â
