LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant softball earned a split with visiting Kentucky Christian on Saturday, getting a walk-off win in game one, 7-6, before falling in game two, 9-3.
GAME ONE: Covenant 7, Kentucky Christian 6
Myla Still's walk-off RBI fielder's choice capped off a three-run comeback in the seventh inning, giving the Scots (1-6) a 7-6 win over Kentucky Christian (3-4) in game one.
Trailing the whole game, Covenant never lost hope, eventually putting together their best rally of the campaign to earn the victory.Â
Charley Clark (1-3) gained the victory in the circle, throwing all seven frames and striking out five. She also added a trio of hits and two RBIs at the dish.
Cailey Barnett added a three-hit game of her own as well, whileÂ
Lexi Tincknell and
Madison Taylor each picked up a pair of hits.
After a tumultuous first two innings, the Scots trailed 4-0, but began to spark the comeback effort with a three-run bottom of the third, getting RBIs from
Cassidi Phillips, Tincknell, and Clark to make it 4-3.
Clark put up three straight zeros in the circle after that, but allowed two runs (one earned) in the top of the seventh, putting Covenant in a 6-3 hole with three outs to work with.
They didn't even need two of them.
Taylor led off the final frame with a double, and Phillips, Barnett and Tincknell followed with three singles to put the winning run at second with nobody out.
Finally, with one out, Clark singled home the tying run and advanced Tincknell, the winning run, to third. Still, who was 0-2 heading into that at-bat, put the ball in play in a tough spot between a drawn-in infield, forcing a late throw to home as Tincknell slid across with the winning run.
Sara Bays (1-2) was handed the loss for the Knights, but she and Ariana Adams had two hits each to lead their offense.
GAME TWO: Kentucky Christian 9, Covenant 3
Seven unanswered Knight runs proved to be the difference as the Scots fell, 9-3, in game two.
Cassidi Phillips,
Megan Porras, Elizabath Yother, and
Lexi Tincknell contributed more stellar offense in this one, getting two hits each, with Tincknell adding two RBIs.
Covenant's first run came in the bottom of the second inning, as Tincknell hammered her first career home run over the center field fence to tie it at one.
Following that, Kentucky Christian (4-4) used a six-run third and another one in the fourth to run away with it.Â
The Scots (1-7) still showed they had some fight late, tacking on two runs between the sixth and seventh innings, but it was not enough.
Yother (0-4) was handed the loss in the circle, while Abby McPherson (3-0) earned the win. Sara Bays (3-for-4, three RBIs) and Rebecca Engler (4-for-4, three runs, RBI) carried the offensive load.
