MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Covenant baseball split their Saturday doubleheader with Huntingdon in Montgomery, taking game one 13-2 before falling 13-3 in game two, ultimately falling in the series.
GAME ONE: Covenant 13, Huntingdon 2
Three big crooked numbers, two of which came late, and a career-best pitching performance from
Adkin Finch propelled the Scots to a dominant 13-2 win in game one.
Nate Jones and
Daniel Counts collected three hits each to pace the offense, while
Matthew Ianniello hit his first homer as a Scot, going 2-for-5 with three RBIs overall. Finch (3-1) fired seven innings in his excellent start, striking out three and allowing just three hits, a walk, and two runs.
Both starters kept the scoresheet empty for the first three innings of this one, but in the fourth, Covenant put up their first crooked number of the contest, a four-spot, with
Elliott Eastin and
Luke Carter driving in one run each and Ianniello's two-run shot providing the other two.
After the Hawks responded with a pair of runs in the sixth, the Scots came right back in the top of the seventh with five more, getting RBI singles from Counts and Ianniello and RBI walks from Eastin and Carter.
In the eighth, Covenant would tack on the final punch, as Counts singled home a run,
Ezra Finton added another on an RBI hit-by-pitch, and Eastin brought in one on a fielder's choice, and the final one scored on a miscue by the Hawks.
For Huntingdon, Brodie Holcomb brought in two runs on his two-run homer, while Jable Ramey (3-1) was handed the loss on the mound.
GAME TWO: Huntingdon 13, Covenant 3 (8 innings)
The Hawks scored early and did not look back, taking a 13-3 run-rule win in game two.Â
Roby McClarnon and
Elliott Eastin had two-hit games in this one, while Eastin,
Matthew Ianniello, and
Daniel Counts brought in the three runs for the Scots.
It was Counts that began the scoring for the Scots in game two, as his RBI groundout scored
Nate Jones from third to give Covenant a 1-0 lead.
However, Huntingdon responded with three in the bottom of the frame to take a lead they would not let go of.
The Scots attempted to get back into the game in the sixth, as Eastin and Ianniello singled in two runs to make it 6-3 at that point.
The Hawks were not done offensively, though, as they tacked on seven more, including the walk-off run, in the final three frames.
MD Johnson (4-0) earned a win behind 5.2 innings of three-run ball, while
Zach Barrett (1-4) got the loss.
