LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant baseball scored 21 runs between the two games of Friday's doubleheader, but ended up splitting with visiting Wheaton.
GAME ONE: Covenant 8, Wheaton 6
Covenant came back from down 3-0 and 6-5 to take an 8-6 win over Wheaton in game one.
Jonathan Glover (1-0) earned the win after throwing three scoreless frames to end the game, striking out three. His batterymate
Hudson Couch came in clutch on the other side, tripling home two runs to give the Scots a lead they would not relinquish.
The scoring began with the Thunder, as they compiled three runs in the first two innings. In the bottom of the second, however, Covenant put on a show, scoring four runs, capped off by a
Roby McClarnon inside-the-park home run.Â
Wheaton was not done, adding three runs between the fourth and fifth innings, two of which came on passed balls.
Couch made up for those.
His two-RBI triple with two outs gave the Scots the lead back, and then McClarnon added an RBI single to pad the lead.Â
Glover did the rest, facing just seven hitters the rest of the way to close it out.
Thunder outfielder Tyler Burr went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead their offense. JD Van Hook (0-1) got the loss.
GAME TWO: Wheaton 17, Covenant 13
Wheaton came back from a 10-3 deficit to upend the Scots, 17-13, in game two.Â
After falling behind early again, Covenant responded with 10 unanswered runs, headed up by
Ezra Finton's two homers and five RBIs.
Nate Jones also added a two-run shot in this stretch.
However, the Thunder offense got going again themselves, scoring a run in the fifth and sixth innings before exploding for seven runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth to build an insurmountable lead. Will Clegg had all the go-ahead RBIs for Wheaton, including a three-run homer in the seventh.
The Scots did get some notable pieces of hitting from
Luke Carter and
Sam Cecil in the bottom of the seventh, when, trailing by two, as a pinch-hitter, Carter homered to left to cut it to one, and then a Thunder error allowed
Sam Cecil to drive in
Ryan MacLellan on a double to left center.
On the pitching side,
James Lee started and was masterful after the first inning, ultimately striking out four men over four innings.
Isaac Leicht (0-1) was handed the loss in relief.
Jacob Moulton (1-0) earned the win for Wheaton, while Tyler Burr (4-for-5, two RBIs), Jacob Scott (4-for-4), and Clegg (3-for-5, sis RBIs) paced the offense.
