LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant baseball, in response to losing a 10-3 lead yesterday, left no doubt about their 2026 season hopes with 10-7 and 13-3 wins to cap off their four-game series with Wheaton on Saturday at the Covenant baseball field.
GAME ONE: Covenant 10, Wheaton 7
The Scots (5-1) flipped the script on the Thunder (1-2) in game one, using a six-run bottom of the sixth to garner a 10-7 comeback win in game one.
Elliott Eastin and
Matthew Ianniello combined for five hits in this one, and
Sam Cecil drove in the winning run with his two-RBI single in the sixth.
After trailing 4-0 early, the Scots manufactured a couple of two-run innings, thanks to a
Roby McClarnon triple, a
Nate Jones sacrifice fly and Ianniello's RBI double, cutting the deficit to 6-4 with three innings to go.
When Wheaton tacked on a run in the fifth, it was up to the offense to come through again.
They did.
Austin Weatherford started things with an RBI hit-by-pitch, and then McClarnon followed with a sacrifice fly. Finally, Cecil broke it open with his two-RBI single and Eastin added the finishing touch with a two-RBI single of his own.
The defense did the rest, as
Adkin Finch (1-0) earned the win, thanks to McClarnon's game-saving heads-up play, throwing out Wheaton's Hudson Gutwein at third from medium-deep left field for the second out and then catching Chris Lynam's game-ending pop-up to seal it.
David Levengood (0-1) was handed the loss for the Thunder, while their top of the order, Tyler Burr and James Scott, kept up their hot hitting with multi-hit efforts.
GAME TWO: Covenant 13, Wheaton 3
The Scots offense came out hot and
Jake Schock threw a gem to conclude the series with a dominant 13-3 win in game two.
Cole Akins hit a pair of homers,
Ezra Finton added a tater, and
Nate Jones thumped a moonshot of his own to ingite the onslaught, while Schock started and threw 4.2 masterful innings, giving up three runs, all of which scored after he left the game.
Akins got Covenant (6-1) on top in the first inning with a two-run homer to left, and then went back-to-back with Finton in the third to extend the lead to 5-0. Jones got in on the fun later that inning, hammering a two-run homer to make it 7-0 Scots.
Leading 9-0 going into the fifth, Schock started to tire, loading the bases with two out. Jake Scott of Wheaton punished the first pitch he saw from
Aeden Beuning in relief, but did not touch home plate on his trip around the bases, leading to only three runs being scored and the final out of the frame being recorded to cease the rally instantaneously.
Sam Cecil made sure to end the game in fitting fashion, doubling to left center to clear the bases and put the game out of reach in the fifth.
The other highlight came in the sixth, as freshman
Austin Molsberger, making his collegiate debut, got out of trouble by catching a bullet off the bat of Mason Diel and throwing back to third to complete the double play.
Cole Daggett (0-1) got the loss for Wheaton, while the offense managed just four hits against the Scots' pitching.
